Detroit Free Press covers Ignition Interlock Ad

May 22, 2008

He just finalized his divorce and now Kiefer Sutherland turns up where he probably doesn't want to be. (No -- not in Barbara Walters' autobiography!)

The American Beverage Institute is continuing its national radio and print advertising campaign to fight car ignition interlock devices that promote sobriety. A full-page ad running in the New York Times explains that although interlocks are a good idea for people with multiple DUI arrests like actor Sutherland and drivers with high blood-alcohol concentration levels like Green Day lead singer Billie Joe Armstrong and former pro football player Steve McNair, they shouldn't be applied to all drivers.

One the other side of the fence: Mothers Against Drunk Driving President Glynn Birch, who told the Connecticut Post in 2007: "This kind of technology has a proven track record of success, and it should be implemented everywhere."
