Interlock Manufacturers
Ignition interlock companies have been lobbying for more widespread use of in-car breathalyzer interlock technology throughout the country. It’s no surprise that those who manufacture, install, and maintain interlocks would want greater interlock use. In fact, the co-owner of Ace Ignition Interlock in Kansas was recently promoting a low-BAC, first-offender bill in the media when he admitted that the legislation would cause his business to triple.[1]
Spotlight on Smart Start
Smart Start Inc. which touts itself as “the nation’s premier provider of ignition interlock services” has wedged its way into the interlock debate through testifying before state legislatures, providing interlock demonstrations at press conferences, and waging a public opinion campaign through blog posts and press releases.
Matt Strausz of Smart Start of Kansas and Nebraska frequently updates his blog with posts encouraging the passage of harsher interlock laws while, simultaneously, offering discounts on interlocks for potential new customers.
In Kentucky, the brother of the sponsor of an interlock bill was one of very few interlock dealers in the state. The brother’s company has exclusive rights to distribute Smart Start interlocks in Kentucky. Is that a coincidence?[2]
A Smart Start job posting recently bragged that “Ignition Interlocks are the nation's fastest growing industry” because “Local, State and Federal laws are changing daily, requiring more and more people to install ignition interlocks in their vehicles.” The listing encourages applicants to get in “on the ground floor of what is about to be a breakout business.”
If you follow the money, you’ll find the truth behind industry support of expanded interlock laws.
